Nathan Gill (born July 6, 1973 in Kingston upon Hull , England ) is a British politician (formerly UKIP , now Brexit Party ). He was a Member of the European Parliament for Wales from 2014 to 2020 .

Life

Gill moved to Anglesey , Wales with his family as a child . After completing his school education, he took over the family business in the field of elderly care.

Gill is married and his wife is from the United States . The couple have five children. Gill is a member of confessing to Mormonism counting Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints , for whom he worked for a period of six years on Anglesey as a bishop.

Gill was initially a member of the Conservative Party , but joined UKIP in 2005. In August 2013 he applied in the constituency of Anglesey in a necessary by -election for a seat in the National Assembly for Wales . Although he was clearly defeated by the victorious Rhun ap Iorwerth from Plaid Cymru , with 14.32 percent he was able to achieve the highest percentage of votes for his party in an election for the Welsh parliament.

After Gill had worked as an assistant to MEP John Bufton , the party named him the top candidate in the Wales constituency for the 2014 EU elections after his health-related withdrawal . Gill was able to win one of the four mandates to be awarded, in the EU Parliament he is a member of the Committee on Fisheries .

In December 2014, Gill was elected Chair of UKIP's Welsh National Association. In the election in May 2016 , he won a seat in the National Assembly for Wales . He then applied for the chairmanship, but was defeated by Neil Hamilton . The decision provoked criticism from then party chairman Nigel Farage . Although Gill had announced in advance that he would give up his seat in the European Parliament in the event of an election to the National Assembly, he now moved away from this project. After the leadership of UKIP threatened to expel him from the party if he did not renounce one of his two mandates, Gill left the group in August 2016. At the same time he announced that he would now act as an independent member of parliament. In December 2017, Gill finally gave up his seat, and Mandy Jones replaced him .

In December 2018, Gill announced his exit from UKIP and justified this with a change of course for the party. They are increasingly concerned less about supporting Brexit , instead Islamophobia is coming to the fore. Specifically, he made this tied to the increased influence of Tommy Robinson . In the EU Election 2019 Gill candidate again, now for the United Kingdom and Gibraltar European Union membership referendum Party.
