Jimmy Eat World is an American rock band from Mesa , Arizona .

Career

Jimmy Eat World was founded in 1993 in Mesa, Arizona by singer / guitarist Jim Adkins, drummer Zach Lind, guitarist Tom Linton and bassist Mitch Porter. The band name comes from a drawing that Tom's younger brother Ed made at the age of eight due to an argument with his slightly overweight brother Jim and called it Jimmy Eat World to express that his brother was so fat he could eat the whole world . When Tom Linton saw the picture, he was so impressed with the (grammatically incorrect) lettering that he suggested naming the band after it.

In 1994 the band recorded their self-financed debut album Jimmy Eat World . Only 2000 copies of it were published by the independent label Wooden Blue and is now a sought-after collector's item. Shortly afterwards, bassist Mitch Porter left the band for personal reasons and Rick Burch, another school friend, became a new member.

In 1995 a talent scout discovered the band and Jimmy Eat World signed a recording deal with Capitol Records . There the band released their second album Static Prevails in 1996 , which was a respectable success in the USA and led to extensive tours . Across the Atlantic, however, the CD was not released due to a lack of engagement from Capitol Records.

The album Clarity , produced in 1999 , was initially only released in the USA, where Jimmy Eat World was now playing in front of sold-out halls. The single Lucky Denver Mint wasn't released by Capitol Records until the song had long been a hit on national radio. In order to make the leap to Europe, the band bought large amounts of the album with their own money and sent them to Europe. Clarity sold so well, especially in Germany, that the band organized a five-week European tour at short notice. In this context it came to the separation of Capitol Records, which was only right for the two parties.

The separation from Capitol was a liberation for the band. She financed the recordings for the album Bleed American herself again, mainly with part-time jobs and tour income. On their European tour in 2000, Jimmy Eat World even managed to play a sold out show at Tobby Holzinger's ( Your Choice Records ) legendary Bochum rock club "Blackout", where a professional live recording was made as part of the Your Choice Live Series should appear, but has remained unpublished to this day. When the recordings for the album Bleed American were finished, the band offered them to several record companies, but finally decided on DreamWorks Records , where the album was released in 2001, for the first time worldwide. In the meantime, the German partner of Capitol Records, EMI , had recognized the potential and officially released the albums Clarity and Static Prevails in Germany.

After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 in the USA , the album Bleed American was subsequently renamed Jimmy Eat World and the single of the same name was renamed Salt Sweat Sugar .

After a month-long global tour, Jimmy Eat World began recording their fifth album, Futures , in 2003 , but after a while discovered that they were dissatisfied with the results. With a heavy heart, they ended the collaboration with long-time producer and friend Mark Trombino and looked around for a new producer, who they finally found in Gil Norton .

While the pieces of music on Clarity were more extravagant and experimental, while on Bleed American they were more poppy, harder and generally more accessible, the fifth album Futures , released at the end of 2004, formed a successful symbiosis of these two directions. Futures entered the US charts at number 6, and also achieved high sales figures in Europe, supported by the single releases Pain and Work . 599,000 copies were sold in the US alone.

The album Chase This Light was released on October 16, 2007 in the USA and on October 19 in Germany. Single releases of these are Big Casino and Always Be .

In the fall of 2010, the seventh studio album, Invented, was released.

In 2012, the band announced on Twitter and their Facebook page that work on their eighth studio album had begun. It was released on June 7, 2013 with the name Damage . The song release for this was I Will Steal You Back . After a short break, the band released their ninth studio album "Integrity Blues" in October 2016.

In October 2019 the band released their tenth album "Surviving".

Some of the band's songs were featured in the soundtracks of certain video games such as: B. "Tony Hawk's Underground 2", "Burnout 3: Takedown", "Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition" or "Need for Speed ​​Shift 2" are used.
