Jim Cash (born January 17, 1947 in Boyne City , Charlevoix County , Michigan , † March 25, 2000 in East Lansing , Michigan) was an American screenwriter and university lecturer .

Life

Cash grew up in Grand Rapids and received his Bachelor of Arts in English in 1970 and his Master of Arts in radio and television from Michigan State University in 1972 . Since then he has been teaching film history there as an adjunct assistant professor . In 1985 he founded the Jim Cash Creative Writing Award Scholarship.

During his time as a lecturer, he met the student Jack Epps Jr. in 1975 . In the MSU Union Grill they wrote 10 film ideas on paper napkins and then tried to work out their ideas and sell them. But it wasn't until 1986 that they made the breakthrough with Prosecutors Don't Kiss and Top Gun . Top Gun was the seventh unproduced screenplay by Jim Cash and Jack Epps. They had introduced it to Bruckheimer, and because several films about flying had just been released, it was rejected. Only after a few producer changes was the book accepted and filmed.

At the beginning of 2000 he was admitted to the hospital with intestinal problems and died a few days later.
