James Allan "Jim" Holton (born April 11, 1951 in Lesmahagow , South Lanarkshire , Scotland , † October 4, 1993 in Warwick , Warwickshire , England ) was a Scottish football player on the position of a defender .

Life

The then 17-year-old Holton received his first professional contract at West Bromwich Albion , where he was under contract for three years, but was never used. In 1971 he moved to Shrewsbury Town , where he made his breakthrough.

Two years later he was signed by Manchester United and experienced in his first season 1973/74 with the Red Devils one of the blackest hours in club history, when the glorious club suffered relegation to the second division . In December 1974, Holton suffered a broken leg that forced him to take a long break from playing. It was just the beginning of a series of injuries that Holton would keep set back over the next few years. After another broken leg, still in the service of Manchester United, he thought of a new start with another employer and moved first to the Miami Toros in 1976 and soon afterwards to Sunderland , where he only played briefly before joining Coventry City had a longer stay again. But the bad luck with injuries stuck with him and burdened him so much that he was no longer used at his last employer, Sheffield Wednesday . Holton died of a heart attack at the age of 42 .

Before his first leg break in December 1974, Holton completed a total of 15 international matches for the Scottish national team . The highlight of his career in the national team was participation in the 1974 World Cup , where he played all of the Bravehearts' preliminary rounds .
