James Leonard "Jim" Lewis (born June 26, 1927 in Hackney , † November 21, 2011 in Kelvedon Hatch ) was an English football player . Although the striker had always been an amateur during his sports career, he was part of the championship team of the professional club Chelsea , which won the English championship in the 1954/55 season. He also ran 49 times for the English amateur team and took part in three Olympic Games in 1952, 1956 and 1960.
Athletic career
Shortly after the end of World War II, Lewis joined the amateur club on Walthamstow Avenue . There he played in a team with his father (Jim senior), who spent a total of 36 years in the club in various functions. Jim Junior was for Walthamstow later twice in the final of the FA Amateur Cup and won the trophy in both 1952 and 1961. He also appeared as a goal scorer in both finals and his goal in the 1961 final was his 50th goal of the season. He was also part of the team that in the 1952/53 season in the FA Cup forced the favorites Manchester United with a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in a replay. Here Lewis also provided the goal and almost sealed the sensation in stoppage time if he hit the post. In the second game he and his men lost 2: 5, but here too he had scored the two goals, which catapulted himself into the focus of some professional clubs.
It was Ted Drake as Chelsea FC manager who signed him in September 1952. Lewis spent a total of six years with the "Blues" and he scored 38 goals in 90 league games. In addition, he won the English championship in the 1954/55 season - here he met six times in 17 matches. Another highlight was his participation in the 1958 European Fair Cup final with a selection from London in Barcelona , which was lost 6-0 in the second leg. In the same year he returned to Walthamstow Avenue and remained active there for another ten years. He remained an amateur and went about his trade as a salesman.
