Jim Miller (drummer)
Jim Miller (born 1953 or 1954 in Indianapolis ; † February 25, 2019 ) was an American jazz musician ( drums , composition ) who was active in the Philadelphian music scene .
Live and act
Miller grew up in Indianapolis and first came to Philadelphia in 1977 on a tour in 1977. He became known in the city as the co-founder of the fusion band Reverie , in which keyboardists Mark Knox, bassist Gerald Veasley and saxophonist EJ Yellin played, as well as guest musicians such as Jef Lee Johnson . He also worked in Philadelphia from the 1980s with Johnny Coles , John Blake Jr. , Al Gray , Reggie Workman , Larry McKenna , Richie Cole , Charles Fambrough , Randy Brecker , Buddy DeFranco and Tyrone Brown . Miller also belonged to the bands of Evelyn Simms , Eddie Green and Denis DiBlasio . In 1986 he founded the music label Dreambox Media , which in 1999 received the Best of Philly Award from Philadelphia Magazine for the best jazz label.
Miller is also the author of A Brief History of Time-Keeping: From Baby Dodds to Jack DeJohnette . In later years he led the formation Miller Time , with which he presented three albums. Several of his compositions have been included in the Real Philadelphia Book (Temple University Press), a compendium of jazz and blues compositions by musicians associated with the city. Miller received the Jazz Journalists Association's 2013 Jazz Hero Award for service to the Philadelphia area . In the field of jazz he was involved in around 40 recording sessions between 1980 and 2010, including a. also with Suzanne Cloud , Jim Ridl and most recently with the Monkadelphia formation (album Crepuscule , with Chris Farr, Tony Micelli, Tom Lawton, Micah Jones ). Miller died in 2019 of complications from sepsis at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital.
