Jimbour is a small town in the north of the Darling Downs region in Queensland , Australia . It is located approximately 236 kilometers from Brisbane and 109 kilometers from Toowoomba . The closest place is Dalby . In 2016, 255 people were counted in Jimbour and the surrounding area.

Surname

The name of the place goes back to the rancher Thomas Bell, who built the historic Jimbour House . He heard Gimba or Jimba from the local Aborigines of the Kamilaroi and assumed that it means good pastures (German: good pasture land ). A similar word in the Kamilaroi Thimba language means sheep.

In Jimbour is the listed Jimbour House of sandstone with several outbuildings, is one of the earliest buildings in Darling Downs. It is an example of early European colonization and ranching of Queensland.

Other buildings are a school, town hall, butcher's shop and a post office.

The Dingo Fence begins in Jimbour and leads 5412 kilometers to the Great Australian Bight .

The Prussian explorer Ludwig Leichhardt started his first expedition from 1844 to 1845 from this place, which took him over 4,800 kilometers into the Northern Territory to Port Essington .
