Jindřichohradecké místní dráhy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jindřichohradecké místní dráhy as (JHMD) is a private railway company based in Jindřichův Hradec in the Czech Republic . The joint-stock company founded by Eisenbahnfreunde has been the owner and operator of the narrow-gauge branch lines Jindřichův Hradec – Obrataň and Jindřichův Hradec – Nová Bystřice in southern Bohemia since 1998 .

The JHMD was founded by railway enthusiasts on September 19, 1994 in Prague. In January 1995 the new company was entered in the local commercial register. From then on, the company operated tourist train services on the narrow-gauge railways from Jindřichův Hradec during the summer months. Only when the regular train service on the branch to Nové Bystřice by the state railway České dráhy (ČD) was discontinued on January 25, 1997, the company also applied to take over both routes. On February 28, 1998, both narrow-gauge railways were finally transferred to the JHMD for a symbolic price of CZK 1  .

Since then, JHMD has operated both local public transport and nostalgic tourist traffic with historic vehicles on both branches.

In 1999, JHMD took over the Czech Republic's only manufacturer of Edmondson cardboard tickets from NADAS . The printing house has been located in Kamenice nad Lipou since 2000 . The tickets are produced for personal use as well as for museum railways and the nostalgic transport of the ČD state railway.

From 2009 to 2013, JHMD was also the operator of seasonal passenger transport on the standard gauge lines Čížkovice – Obrnice (Švestková dráha) and Kaštice / Vilémov – Kadaň-Prunéřov (Doupovská dráha) in Ústecký kraj .

The lease with the National Technical Museum in Prague, which had provided four cars and a locomotive for the operation of the nostalgic trains in the 1990s, ended in December 2017. These are the Mallet locomotive U 47.001 and four freight cars. In future they will be exhibited in the museum depot in Chomutov. The reason for the termination of the rental agreement is damage to the U 47.001 engine, which would cost around two million kronor to repair. However, the JHMD refuses to assume the costs and instead refers to the investments made during the service life of the locomotive.

The state infrastructure operator Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC) took over the management of the two own routes from Jindřichův Hradec to Nové Bystřice and Obrataň on October 16, 2017. The cooperation with the SŽDC began after an accident in August 2016. The railway inspection then found that legal regulations had not been complied with. The operating contract with SŽDC has a volume of two million crowns annually. The JHMD pays 125,000 CZK a month and also bears the costs for further training for employees and the creation of timetables. Since then, the regulation for the simplified traffic service D3 has been in use.

For financial reasons, JHMD only partially met its payment obligations, so that SŽDC finally terminated the operating contract on September 30, 2019. On September 11, 2019, the outstanding amount totaled 1.9 million crowns. At the end of September 2019, the Parliament of the South Bohemian Region finally approved a new transport contract with a term of five years, which also includes the purchase of new vehicles. The subsidies per train-kilometer will be increased from 87 to 125 crowns initially. Further increases are planned for the following years, so that an average of CZK 138.65 per kilometer will be paid over the term of the contract. The South Bohemia region also plans to acquire three new motor trains for JHMD by 2022. On October 1, 2019, after all outstanding debts had been settled, the JHMD concluded a new operating contract with the SŽDC.

For the section of the route in the Vysočina region, a transport contract is still in force until 2024, which only provides for subsidies of 87 kroner per train-kilometer. If the contract is not extended, the South Bohemian Region guarantees that it will continue to order trains to Kamenice nad Lipou.

Diesel locomotives and railcars

In 1997, JHMD took over a total of 11 locomotives of the 705.9 series (ČSD T 47.0) from the České dráhy. These locomotives were developed by ČKD in Prague in the mid-1950s especially for the narrow-gauge railways operated by ČSD . At the time of the takeover, almost all of these locomotives were over 40 years old and thus at the limit of their service life. In order to ensure continued operation of these locomotives, the JHMD had some of the locomotives at ŽOS Česká Třebová completely modernized. In addition to replacing the diesel engine, all electrical equipment including the traction generator was replaced.

More recently, JHMD has acquired several used vehicles from Polish narrow-gauge railways. In addition to a Romanian type FAUR L45H locomotive, there are also several railcars of the PKP series MBxd2 . They are used in a modernized form (“Nautilus”) on the Jindřichův Hradec – Obrataň line.

Today, only four-axle passenger cars of the Balm / u type, which were manufactured by ČKD in Prague in the 1960s, are available for regular passenger train traffic . The wagons have hard-padded benches, closed end stages, translation windows and their own oil heating.

Freight traffic is handled with trolleys that were manufactured by the Poprad wagon factory in the 1980s . Some four-axle narrow-gauge freight cars are used in particular as bicycle cars in passenger trains.

A historical train in the style of ČSD is available for nostalgic traffic.
