Yitzhak Shapira ( Hebrew יצחק שפירא, engl. Transcription Yitzhak Shapira; * 1966 ) is an Israeli rabbi who has published several books that have received national attention in Israel.

Live and act

Schapira lives in the West Bank in the Jewish settlement of Yitzhar and is chairman of the Dorshei-Yihudcha-Yeshiva, a religious school. In 2006, he protested against his colleague Jossi Peli being arrested and interrogated on suspicion of sedition after an article advocated the expulsion or killing of all male Palestinians over the age of 13.

Akiva Eldar, a Haaretz columnist , claimed in 2009 that the yeshiva received significant financial support from the Israeli government. Intellectually he was influenced by the rabbis Abraham Isaak Kook and Yitzchak Ginsburgh .

In 2008 he signed a manifesto supporting two Israelis who beat up two Arab youths on Holocaust Remembrance Day . In January 2010, Schapira was arrested on suspicion of setting fire to a Palestinian mosque in the village of Yasuf in December 2009.

In 2009 he published the book The King's Torah , co-authored with Josef Elitzur , in which he wrote that Jews were allowed to kill non-Jews (including children) if they threatened Israel. The prerequisites for this are given, among other things, if one can assume that a child will grow up as an enemy of the Jewish people. The killing is still permitted in order to put enemy heads of government under pressure or if they are “in the way”.

The book was published by the yeshiva HaRaayon HaYehudi in Jerusalem, an institution close to the late ideas of Rabbi Meir Kahane . The book contains a recommendation from Rabbi Zalman Nechemia Goldberg. Ophir Pines-Paz , a member of the Knesset , filed a complaint with the Attorney General against Schapira for publishing the book. The case was closed by prosecutors in 2012 because there was insufficient evidence that it was published with the intention of inciting racism .

In October 2010, he urged Israeli soldiers to use Palestinians as human shields because, in his opinion, it would violate true Jewish values for a soldier to risk his life to protect enemy soldiers or civilians.
