João Manuel da Cruz da Silva Leitão (born August 26, 1952 in Viana do Castelo ) is a Portuguese diplomat .

Career

Silva Leitão graduated from Lisbon University with a degree in law and then completed a master's degree in political science at the same faculty. From 1976 to 1984 he was a research assistant at his faculty.

On June 30, 1979, he entered the diplomatic service of his country. On February 9, 1984, he was appointed Consul General in Frankfurt am Main . On September 22, 1986 he moved to the Portuguese embassy in Moscow . From June 1, 1991 he was Head of the Department for Multilateral Relations and on June 8, 1993 he was appointed Counselor . From June 13, 1994 he was at the Portuguese Embassy in Bonn , and from June 19, 1999 in the State Chancellery. On September 24, 1999, he was appointed Minister Plenipotentiary and Deputy Director General for bilateral relations.

From 2004 to 2008 he was Portuguese ambassador to Finland , from 2008 to 2012 ambassador to Lithuania . With effect from February 15, 2012, he was appointed Inspector General of the Diplomatic Service (IGDC).
