Joachim barley constable (* 27. June 1647 in Wismar ; † 10. April 1721 in Hamburg ) was a German composer of the Baroque .

Life

Gerstenbüttel studied theology in Wittenberg and devoted himself to bass singing as well as violin and piano playing. He gave up studying theology and went to Hamburg , where he worked as a music teacher and took part in Weckmann's Collegium musicum . Over time he became so popular that in 1675 he was elected cantor of the Johanneum and director of five main churches as the successor to Christoph Bernhard . However, the political situation and internal quarrels in the city led to the decline of musical life, so that towards the end of his life Gerstenbüttel could only do his work under precarious circumstances. Gerstenbüttel's successor in Hamburg was Georg Philipp Telemann in 1721 .

plant

At least 69 cantatas by Gerstenbüttel are known which are formally based on the sacred concerts of Heinrich Schütz and are characterized by great expressiveness.
