Joachim Kahlert (born March 26, 1954 in Cloppenburg ) is a German educator and university professor . His main research interests include the theory and practice of elementary school pedagogy and subject teaching with special attention to inclusion in schools and lessons. With numerous publications, projects and collaborations, he has had a decisive influence on elementary school didactics , in particular the didactics of general teaching . From 2001 to 2005 he was the first chairman of the Society for Didactics of General Education (GDSU). In 1998 he was appointed to the chair for elementary school education and didactics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU), from where he campaigned for networked cooperation between science and educational policy, university and school, research and teaching. Since 2009 he has been director of the Munich Center for Teacher Education. In 2016 he was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit. He will retire in 2018.

life and work

Kahlert studied for teaching at primary and secondary schools in Bremen and then worked for 10 years as a teacher, then as a research assistant at several universities. From 1994 to 1996 he was the professor for school pedagogy at the University of Rostock , and in 1996 he was appointed professor for didactics in general teaching at the University of Bielefeld . In 1998 he was appointed to the chair for elementary school education and didactics at the LMU. He turned down calls at the Universities of Münster and Cologne in favor of new tasks in Munich. From 2004 to 2007 he was director of the Department of Education and Rehabilitation, and from 2007 to 2011 Dean of the Faculty of Psychology and Education. As director of the Center for Teacher Education , he coordinated the Munich project “Science-based professional field reference through adaptively supported networking” of the “Quality Offensive Teacher Education” of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), in which 15 faculties of the LMU are involved.

Kahlert's work is characterized by the close connection between theory and practice, a scientific foundation and usability for everyday use. The educational reform program of the 1970s, which called for equal opportunities for all children, a scientific orientation and professionalization of the teaching profession on a scientific basis for all school levels, led to the goal. The thematic breadth of his projects and publications began with questions about nuclear energy and environmental policy , expanded in connection with his tasks in teacher training to all areas of subject teaching and its didactics, gradually encompassing primary school work as a whole up to classroom design and inclusive pedagogy .

Kahlert used his biographical experience at his Munich chair for sustainable content-related and structural networking and cooperation between science, politics and practice. High-quality teaching materials were just as important to him as basic didactic publications and educational policy statements.

His concept of didactic networks , with Walter Köhnlein's dimensions of general teaching, shaped the content- related discussion of general teaching didactics in the 1990s and clearly influenced the structure of the general teaching perspective of the Society for Didactics of General Education (GDSU). His network of bipolar pairs of terms, which mediate between life-world experiences and the developed knowledge and skills of the specialist cultures, spans the didactic space for educationally effective teaching topics. In collaboration with Ulrich Heimlich , professor for pedagogy for the learning disabled at the LMU Munich, he expanded the approach to the model of inclusive didactic networks .

He shaped the concept as co-editor of a new generation of handbooks for primary school pedagogy and primary school didactics as well as for the didactics of material teaching. With "Sachunterricht und seine Didaktik" he succeeded in creating a standard work on specialist teacher training for specialist teaching. In addition to his special contributions to subject teaching and his didactics, he was responsible for several projects, including a. for theory formation in primary school education , inclusion in schools and lessons , didactic development research , school and lesson development in networks .

Kahlert's interest in cooperating productively with representatives from various fields of science is evident in the joint publication of anthologies, handbooks, school materials and specialist journals, in which he brought his claim to further develop schools and teaching based on research and made them more concrete with his own contributions.
