Joachim Schröter (born April 23, 1931 in Dresden ) is a German theoretical physicist .

Life

From 1941 Schröter was a student at the Dresden Kreuzgymnasium and at the same time a member of the Kreuzchor . After his graduation in 1949 he studied biology at the Free University of Berlin , but moved in 1950 to the specialist physics , which he in 1957 with the diploma graduated in 1962 and Günther Ludwig doctorate was. As his assistant, Schröter followed him to the Philipps University of Marburg , where he completed his habilitation in 1965 and was appointed lecturer in theoretical physics in 1966. In 1971 he spent a research semester at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysics and in 1972 he accepted an appointment to an H2 professorship in Marburg and in 1973 to an H4 professorship for theoretical physics at the newly founded University of Paderborn . He was heavily involved in building them up, u. a. several times as dean and vice dean. In 1992/93 Schröter was a member of the international research group Semantical Aspects of Spacetime Theory , headed by Ulrich Majer and Heinz-Jürgen Schmidt, at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research at Bielefeld University and retired in 1996.

The main area of work was initially statistical physics , above all dealing with basic questions; z. B. How can one derive a macroscopic theory of irreversible processes from a microscopic theory that describes reversible processes . This includes work on macroscopic observables and statistical aggregates of macro systems, as well as the derivation of the Boltzmann equation and its generalization, a so-called master equation . During the stay at the MPI for Biophysics, I also dealt with transport processes through membranes as part of a microscopic theory of electrolytes . This includes work on the derivation of generalized Nernst-Planck equations in which pair correlations are taken into account. In this context, there are also studies of so-called normal solutions of the Fokker-Planck equation . These considerations were generalized to a Boltzmann equation for correlation functions and a correlation thermodynamics derived therefrom, which u. a. was used to calculate transport coefficients in plasmas. Some studies on quantum mechanics are linked to the statistical physics research area . The preoccupation with the theory of relativity resulted in problems that led to two further areas of work. The questions to be solved are: How is it possible to justify the non-visual space-time conceptions of general relativity , and what is a justification? The treatment of the latter problem is part of the meta-theory of physics, which is the focus of Schröter's work up to his retirement. The starting point was the concept of physical theories developed by Günther Ludwig. The space-time theory established here was later further developed by Udo Schelb.
