Joachim Spatz (physicist)
Joachim Pius Spatz (born November 27, 1969 in Heidenheim an der Brenz ) is a German physicist and professor at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .
Live and act
Spatz studied physics at Ulm University and Colorado State University from 1989 until his graduation in 1994 . In 1996 he did his doctorate with Martin Möller with summa cum laude as Dr. rer. nat. This work in the field of macromolecular chemistry was awarded the doctoral prize of the University of Ulm. In 2000 he completed his habilitation in Ulm and received the Venia legendi for physics. He then worked as a C3 professor at Heidelberg University, where he has been a full professor of biophysical chemistry since 2004. From 2004 to 2011, in addition to his professorship, he was also director of the Max Planck Institute for Metals Research in Stuttgart, after which it was renamed the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems , he was also its director until 2015. Since 2016 he has also been director of the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg.
Spatz's main research areas are cell physics and mechanics, materials science and cell adhesion . In 2017 he received the Leibniz Prize for his outstanding research at the boundary between materials science and cell biophysics .
