Joachim von Puttkamer (born November 14, 1964 in Munich ) is a German historian .

From 1986 to 1994 Joachim von Puttkamer studied Eastern European History, Economic Policy and Modern and Contemporary History in Freiburg and London . In 1994 he received his doctorate in Freiburg with a thesis supervised by Gottfried Schramm on the beginnings of worker protection and social legislation in the outgoing Tsarist empire . Since 1994 he has been a research assistant at the chair for Modern and Eastern European History at Monika Glettler in Freiburg. In 2000 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the Hungarian nationality problem of the 19th century in everyday school life. From 2000 to 2002 Puttkamer was a substitute professor in Jena . Puttkamer has been Professor of Eastern European History there since December 2002. Since October 1, 2010, he and Włodzimierz Borodziej have headed the Imre Kertész College of Eastern Europe in the 20th Century. Historical experiences in comparison .

His main research interests include a. State formation and statehood in Eastern Europe, nationalism in East Central and Southeastern Europe, the history of schools and education as well as the Eastern European cultures of remembrance.
