Joan Morris (theologian)

Joan Morris (born April 14, 1901 in Hove , England ; died August 21, 1988 in London ) was a British Catholic theologian and journalist .

Life

Joan Morris first studied art in England , France and Italy . Then she worked as a church painter. She lived in the USA for ten years , where she studied theology at the University of Notre Dame , Indiana, with a focus on the history of liturgy in 1954 . She completed these studies with an MA .

Subsequently, she dealt with other areas of church history and examined in particular the role of women in the church. In connection with this work she wrote books and produced films which she screened in many countries. She has given lectures in the United States and Canada, as well as in Great Britain and other countries in Europe and the Orient. For the New Catholic Encyclopedia she wrote various entries, on the iconography of Pentecost , the iconography of the saints and other topics.

For many years she was involved in the St. Joan's international Alliance , an association that advocates equal rights for women in church, state and society.

She was a committed feminist while remaining loyal to the Church. The ordination of women was an important goal for her.

Her archive is kept in the Fawcett Library at London Guildhall University (now London Metropolitan University ).
