Joan Margaret Walmsley, Baroness Walmsley (born April 12, 1943 in West Derby , Liverpool ) is a British Liberal Democrats politician who has been a member of the House of Lords since 2000 .

Life

Studies and professional career

After attending Notre Dame High School in Liverpool , Joan Walmsley began studying biology at the University of Liverpool and graduated in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. Biology). She then worked for a year as a cell biologist at Christie Hospital in Manchester . After the first marriage in 1966 and the birth of their two children, she devoted herself to raising the children before she later continued her studies at Manchester Polytechnic , which she completed in 1979 with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

She then worked as a teacher at Buxton College , a grammar school in Buxton , between 1979 and 1986 . In 1986 she left school and worked in the company's public relations department before running her own PR agency between 1996 and 2003.

Unsuccessful candidacies for the lower house and upper house member

In addition to her professional career, Joan Walmsley began to be politically active in the early 1990s and ran for the Liberal Democrats in the general election on April 9, 1992 for the first time unsuccessfully for a member of the House of Commons , in the constituency of Leeds South and Morley . When choosing from 1 May 1997 she tried constituency Congleton again unsuccessfully for a seat in the House.

On May 15, 2000, she was raised to the nobility by a letters patent as a Life Peeress with the title Baroness Walmsley, of West Derby in the County of Merseyside . On 23 May 2000 introducing (followed Introduction ) as a member of the House of Lords .

During her previous membership in the House of Lords, Baroness Walmsley, who was a member of the conference committee of the Liberal Democrats from 2000 to 2003, was spokeswoman for her party's early education, education and skills group from 2001 to 2003 . In addition to her role as chairwoman of the women's association of her party ( Women Liberal Democrats ) from 2002 to 2004, she was parliamentary group spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior ( Home Office ) and a member of the Federal Executive Committee of the Liberal Democrats from 2003 to 2004 .

Most recently, Baroness Walmsley, who is also chairwoman of the Botanic Gardens Conservation International organization , was spokeswoman for the Liberal Democrats' group for education and children or for children, schools and families from 2004 to 2010.

Since 2005 she has been married to Martin Thomas, Baron Thomas of Gresford , in third marriage . This makes her and her husband one of the few couples in British history who are members of the House of Lords by virtue of their own nobility.
