Joanne Massiah

Joanne Maureen Massiah (born May 15, 1968 in All Saints ) is a politician from Antigua and Barbuda of the United Progressive Party . She has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2014 .

Education and family

Massiah received her education at the Antigua Girls High School. This was followed by the study of political science at York College of the City University of New York , which she graduated in June 1993 with a Bachelor of Arts. She then studied law at the University of Oregon , where she for doctor of law doctorate was. She was also admitted to the bar in New York State and briefly attended Harvard University . After completing her doctorate, she attended the Norman Manley School of Law in Jamaica . Massiah is the mother of two sons. She is a single parent.

Career

After returning to her home country, Massiah was admitted to the bar and practiced as a lawyer, specializing in civil , commercial and family law cases . In 2003 she was the first woman to serve in the Senate of Antigua and Barbuda for the United Progressive Party . She held this post until her election to the House of Representatives in 2014. She first ran for a seat in the House of Representatives in the 2004 general election . In the constituency of St. Peter, however, she lost to the candidate of the Antigua Labor Party , Asot Michael . Even in the 2009 elections , she could not prevail against him. For the 2014 general election , she set up her party in the constituency of All Saints East & St. Luke . There she was able to prevail with 52.83% of the vote. She had previously held several cabinet positions. Before taking over the Agriculture, Land, Marine Resources and Food Production Resort on May 16, 2008, she was Secretary of State in the Ministry of Agriculture. On March 16, 2009, she then moved to the Ministry of Justice as State Secretary. She held this post until her election. In early 2015 it was announced that Massiah would run for the chairmanship of her party.
