Asot Michael

Asot Anthony Michael (born December 1969 in Dry Hill , Guadeloupe ) is an Antigua and Barbuda politician of the Antigua Labor Party . He has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2004 .

Life

Family and education

Michael's paternal grandfather immigrated to the Caribbean from the Middle East . His father and his brothers were already active in the Antigua Labor Party. Michael received his school education between 1982 and 1986 at St. Joseph's Academy . He then spent a year in Cambridge , Massachusetts . This was followed by a degree in business administration at Barry University , which he completed in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science . From 1990 to 1991 he completed a postgraduate Master of Business Administration at Miami University .

Professional and political career

After completing his training, Michael returned to his home country and initially worked in his father's family business from 1992 to 1994. He then worked for a real estate company. Between 1995 and 1997 he was personal assistant to then Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Lester Bird . Then he rose to become its chief of staff , a position he held until 2000. In March 1999 Michael was appointed to the Antigua and Barbuda Senate . At the same time, he took over the telecommunications, insurance and energy resort as minister. In January 2001, he returned to the Prime Minister's office as State Secretary , where he was mainly concerned with financial matters. In the general election of 2004 he stood in the constituency of St. Peter and was able to prevail with 58.31% against the candidate of the United Progressive Party , Joanne Massiah . So far, he has been able to defend this seat in every subsequent election. Following the 2014 elections , he was appointed Minister for Tourism, Economic Development, Investment and Energy to Prime Minister Gaston Browne's cabinet .
