Jock Young

Jock Young (born March 4, 1942 in Midlothian , † November 16, 2013 in New York City ) was a British sociologist and criminologist .

The son of a Scottish truck driver made the Bachelor - and Master -Examen at the London School of Economics and in 1971 the same place with a thesis on the social response to drug use ( The Drugtakers The Social Meaning of Drug Use. ) For Ph.D . PhD . In this research he developed the term moral panic .

Young was first a sociology professor at Middlesex University, then at the University of Kent, and finally taught at the City University of New York .

From around 1968 Young was one of the most important founders of a Marxist-oriented critical criminology (the so-called "New Criminology") in Great Britain, which later weakened to a social democratic New Realism ( left realism ). Young later turned to cultural criminology in his research .
