Roger Matthews (criminologist)

Roger A. Matthews (born August 14, 1948 in London , † April 7 or April 8, 2020 ) was a British criminologist .

Life

Matthews graduated from Middlesex University , where he received a Bachelor of Arts ( Hons ) in social sciences . He holds a Masters of Arts degree in Sociology and Criminology from the University of Sussex . His promotion to Ph.D. took place in 1983 at the University of Essex with the dissertation Prostitution and social structure: Towards a materialist analysis.

From 1977 to 1990 he taught criminology at Middlesex University, first as a lecturer , then as a senior lecturer . From 1990 to 1993 he was a Senior Lecturer at the University of Leicester . He then returned to Middlesex University and taught here from 1993 to 2004, first as a reader , then as a professor of criminology. From 2004 to 2011 he was Professor of Criminology at London South Bank University . He then moved to the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research at the University of Kent , where he was from then on as a professor of criminology.

Matthews was a member of the British Society of Criminology and the American Society of Criminology . He was also a founding member of the Latin American Society on Penal Law and Criminology (ALPEC) and was on the advisory board of the journal Theoretical Criminology .

He died of SARS-CoV-2 in early April 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK .
