Through the union of the SPD and KPD , he became a member of the SED and returned to Berlin in 1947. In the following year he switched to the SPD and became company secretary. In the Berlin election in 1958 , Sperling was elected to the Berlin House of Representatives. Since the district councilor Kurt Arnold died in December 1960, the district assembly in the Steglitz district elected him as the new councilor for social affairs, so he resigned from parliament in February 1961, and Erich Reinhardt was his successor .
