Joe Arroyo (real name: Álvaro José Arroyo González ; born November 1, 1955 in Cartagena , † July 26, 2011 in Barranquilla ), was a Colombian singer and composer .

biography

He made his first public appearances at the age of eight as a singer at dance events in his hometown. In 1971 his talent was discovered by Ernesto Estrada, the producer of Fruko y sus Tesos , after which he was a member of this formation for ten years. In 1981 he founded his own group La Verdad in whose music he different styles, such as: B. mixed salsa , compás, merengue , reggae and soca . His career almost came to an end in 1983 when health problems and drug addiction almost cost him his life. But he finally managed to overcome this crisis and continue his career as a musician. He died of multiple organ failure after a heart attack on June 29, 2011.

Musical success

One of the biggest hits in 1986 was Rebelión , which was about the rebellion of an African slave in Cartagena in the 17th century . The song La Noche became known beyond South America through the Colombian singer Juanes . In 2011 Arroyo received a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award for his life's work .
