Joseph "Joe" Smith (* 1971 in Chicago ) is an American jazz musician ( drums ).

Live and act

Smith studied at the Cincinnati Conservatory and at the Manhattan School of Music with Vernel Fournier , Jimmy Lovelace , John Von Ohlen , John Riley and Jeff Williams From 1991 to 2000 he played in New York City; subsequently lived in Barcelona. In the same year he released two albums under his own name on Fresh Sound Records , Happy and Melodic Workshop , and others. a. with Bill McHenry , Gorka Benitez , Guillermo Klein , Chris Lightcap and Jorge Rossy . Smith was also involved in recordings by John McNeil ( This Way Out , 2002), Arthur Kell , Ryan Blotnick , Fredrik Carlquist and Brandon Miller . In 2008 he founded the Asociación Libre Orkesta , a big band that combines improvised music with poetry and image projections. In 2010 Smith performed with the Orkesta at the Jazz al Parque festival in Bogotá . He has lived in Berlin since 2011, where he is currently (2015) involved in band projects a. a. by George Donchev , Johannes Lauer , Christian Ugurel and Jessica Einaudi , also worked with the formation Sarsaparilla and in a Shakespeare production of the German Theater ( plays for murderers, victims and others , directed by Dimiter Gotscheff ).
