Johan Ludvig von Holstein , from 1750 Count of Holstein-Ledreborg (born September 7, 1694 in Lübz ; † January 29, 1763 ), was Chancellor of Denmark .

Life

He came from the Möllenhagen line of the Mecklenburg noble family Holstein and was the son of the Danish privy councilor Johann Georg von Holstein (1662-1730) and his first wife Ida von Bülow (1677-1727). The Danish special envoy in St. Petersburg , Carl von Holstein (1700–1763) was one of his brothers. Johan Ludvig married Hedwig von Wind (Hedevig Vind) in 1734, from this marriage their son Christian Frederik Holstein-Ledreborg (* May 10, 1735 - † June 15, 1799) emerged.

Ludvig was privy councilor . From 1735 to 1751 he was Danish Chancellor; his successor was Johann Hartwig Ernst von Bernstorff . In 1750 he was raised to the rank of liege count.

One of his great passions was his collection of art, literature, and manuscripts; he owned a large library. Many parts of his collection can still be viewed today at Ledreborg Castle , which he built in 1739 and has hardly changed since then. The castle has been owned by the Count Holstein-Ledreborg family for more than 250 years.

Another concern of Ludvig was education - for many years he was the patron of the University of Copenhagen and had a decisive influence on the founding of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences .

The Danish name of the Greenland city Sisimiut - Holsteinsborg - goes back to Johan Ludvig von Holstein. He was the leader of the mission quorum that trained missionaries working in Greenland.
