Johan Malthain

Johan Malthain , also Johan Malthan or Johann Molthane (* around 1550 , probably in the Netherlands ; † after 1605 ), was a court painter to the dukes Wilhelm and Johann Wilhelm von Jülich-Kleve-Berg .

life and work

Towards the end of Wilhelm's lifetime and during the reign of Johann Wilhelm von Jülich-Kleve-Berg, Malthain, who was probably born in Holland , was palpable as a court painter in Düsseldorf . In a trial that was conducted against the Duchess Jakobe in 1595 , he referred to himself as "Master Johan Malthain". Portraits he created of both sovereigns and members of the royal family are well known.
