Johann Andreas Schwebel ( Portuguese João André also Joam André) (baptized April 21, 1718 in Altdorf ; † 1759 or 1760 in Lisbon ) was a German draftsman and military architect . He is best known for his pen and ink drawings and as a topographer and cartographer .

Life

Schwebel was a son of Johann Georg Schwebel, a simple mill servant from Nuremberg , and his wife Margaret. He was baptized on April 21, 1718. He worked as an illustrator for historical works and was sent to Altdorf University in 1743 to study mathematics. In Lisbon, several domestic and foreign technicians, engineers, astronomers and cartographers were appointed by decree of the Portuguese government of October 19, 1750 for a period of five years to delimit the borders of the territories of South America from those of the Spanish crown. Schwebel was one of the German military personnel that King John V of Portugal hired for an expedition. From 1750 to 1757 the expedition for scientific studies was active in Portuguese America (in the Amazon region). In 1758, the captain engineer Schwebel made maps and views of this area. For their services as captain of the infantry on the expedition, Schwebel and two other German expedition members, Gaspar João Gerardo de Cronsfeld (or Gronsfeld) and Carlos Ignacio Reverend, received 49,800 reales each month for the year 1751 . In the middle of the year 1756 Schwebel was attacked by the tropical disease so that he had to stay in Belém until the end of 1757 , where he inspected and drew the fortifications. In 1758 he came to Lisbon where he continued to receive payments due to his illness caused by the expedition. He still carried out some work here and died there around 1759 or 1760.
