Johann August von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg (born February 17, 1704 in Gotha ; † May 8, 1767 in Roda ) was a prince from the family of the Ernestine - Wettin branch line Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg and field marshal .

Life

Johann August was born as the son of Duke Friedrich II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (1676–1732) and his wife Magdalena Augusta (1679–1740), a daughter of Prince Karl Wilhelm von Anhalt-Zerbst and his wife Princess Sophia of Saxony- Weißenfels , born.

He entered imperial service in 1725 and fought in Italy and Hungary. He was wounded in the Battle of Grocka and then lived for some time to relax in Altenburg. Then he resumed his service and fought in the War of the Austrian Succession in Silesia, Bohemia, Bavaria and the Rhine. He eventually became a field marshal of the Reich and was given a dragoon regiment.

Johann August lived with his family in Roda, where Frederick the Great also visited him shortly before his death. He was a bearer of the White Eagle Order .

Prince Johann August married on January 6, 1752 in Roda (today: Stadtroda) Countess Luise Reuss zu Schleiz (born July 3, 1726 in Staffelstein ; † May 28, 1773 in Roda ), daughter of Count Heinrich I. Reuss zu Schleiz and Countess Juliane Dorothea zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Virneburg. Luise was the widow of his younger brother Christian Wilhelm (1706–1748). Prince Johann August had two daughters with her:
