Sonderland was a student at the art academy in his hometown. He then went on several study trips through France and the Netherlands, from which he brought many sketches, which then formed the basis of his genre paintings . Sonderland also stayed for a long time in Paris and Frankfurt am Main , where he also distinguished himself in his genre pictures through the wealth of invention, liveliness of representation and naive humor.

Sonderland illustrated the “Malerlieder” of his colleague Robert Reinick as well as Carl Leberecht Immermann'sMünchhausen ” . But Sonderland also added other works by German writers; u. a. here are his “pictures and marginal drawings of German poets”.

In the last years of his life he only turned to the illustration and created a large number of watercolor compositions , lithographs his own and other originals, marginal drawings etc.
