Johann Brokes , also Brockes (* 1513 in Plön ; † March 29, 1585 in Lübeck ), was admiral and later mayor of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck.

biography

Brokes was the son of the mayor of Plön of the same name. He was elected to the city council in 1564. After the loss of the Danish-Luebian fleet off Gotland in 1566, he succeeded the drowned Admiral Bartholomeus Tinnappel as commander in chief of the decimated fleet. The then largest warship, the Adler von Lübeck , was put into service under him in 1567, but in the Three Crowns War until the Peace of Stettin it was no longer used as originally intended, as there were no other ships and crews due to the losses suffered.

Brokes was combing lord from 1573 to 1578 and in 1575/76 on a diplomatic mission at the Danish court with King Frederick II in Copenhagen to clarify questions about the return of the Baltic island of Bornholm, which had been pledged to Lübeck since 1525 .

His preserved grave slab in St. Marien, now erected in the south aisle, shows the married couple kneeling in shell niches and the family coat of arms. His sons Heinrich and Otto Brokes also became mayors of the city.
