Johann Carl Friedrich Gildemeister
Johann Carl Friedrich Gildemeister (born December 13, 1779 in Duisburg , † September 24, 1849 in Bremen ) was a lawyer and a Bremen senator .
biography
Gildemeister was the son of the university professor Johann Friedrich Gildemeister and Caroline Amalie Gildemeister, nee. von Kotzebue (1759–1844), sister of the writer Johanne Karoline Amalie Kotzebue (pseudonym Amalie Berg) and the writer August von Kotzebue .
He studied law and received his doctorate. jur. He then worked as a lawyer in Bremen. In 1813/14, he accompanied Bremen's Senator for Foreign Affairs, Johann Smidt, to Frankfurt am Main , then to the headquarters in Paris , in order to maintain the independence of the three Hanseatic cities (Hamburg, Bremen, Lübeck) and to ensure that they were accepted into the German Confederation . Around 1815 he was an agent of the board of directors and at times editor of the Bremer Zeitung .
In 1816 he was elected to the Bremen Senate, to which he belonged until his death in 1849. In 1827 he concluded a trade agreement for Bremen in Brazil . He remained a close political confidante of Mayor Smidt. Another trip took him to Greece to visit his eldest daughter, who in 1836 married the local classical philologist Heinrich Ulrichs .
He was the father of ten children, u. a. by Otto Gildemeister (1823–1902), a journalist and writer who was also a senator from 1857 to 1890 and from 1871 to 1875 and in the years 1882, 1884 and 1886 mayor of Bremen. He was also the father of the architect Karl Gildemeister (1820–1869).
