Kotzebue is the name of a German-Baltic and Russian noble family that comes from Kossebau near Arendsee in the Altmark .

history

The family first appeared in 1420 with Henning Kossebu zu Stendal and Arnd Cassebu (1420–1454), councilor of the Neustadt Salzwedel. The secure regular series begins with Jacob Kotzebue (1527-1597), Council Treasurer in Magdeburg.

The family flourished especially in the Baltic States , where August Kotzebue was raised to the hereditary Russian nobility in 1785 . His assassination in 1819 resulted in the Karlovy Vary resolutions . August von Kotzebue's descendants were raised to the rank of count in 1874 and incorporated into the register of nobility in Bavaria on January 17, 1906 (for the painter Wilhelm von Kotzebue ).

coat of arms

The family coat of arms shows three (2: 1) blue roses in silver. A capuchin in habit can be seen on the helmet with its blue and silver blankets , wielding a three-strand scourge in his right hand , and his left over his heart.
