Paul Demetrius Graf von Kotzebue ( Russian Коцебу, Павел Евстафьевич ) (born August 22, 1801 in Berlin , † May 2, 1884 in Reval ) was a German-Baltic and Russian general.

Career

Paul Demetrius von Kotzebue was the fifth son of the poet August von Kotzebue . He joined the Russian Army , became Quartermaster General under Paskevich in 1843 and Chief of Staff of the Caucasian Corps in 1846 . Since 1853 chief of the general staff of the Russian army in the Danube principalities , he took part in the defense of Sebastopol and then went to Poland with Gorchakov as chief of the general staff . Kotzebue was in 1859 General of Infantry and in 1862 Governor-General of New Russia and Bessarabia , and later commander of the military district of Odessa , in which position he particularly for application of railroads worked in those areas. Since 1874 Governor General of Poland , he was raised to the hereditary count status by the Emperor of Russia in 1875 . Soon after he celebrated his 60th anniversary of service in Warsaw in early 1880 , he gave up the post of Governor General of Poland and died on May 2, 1884 in Reval.

Honors

The Kotzebue Bridge in Odessa was named in his honor, where he was Governor General between 1862 and 1874.
