Johann Caspar Weidenmann
Johann Caspar Weidenmann (born October 13, 1805 in Winterthur ; † June 6, 1850 there ) was a Swiss painter , draftsman and copyist .
Life
Weidenmann was born the son of a well master . He received his first drawing lessons from 1818 to 1820 with Johann Jakob Sulzer at the boys' school in Winterthur . From 1820 to 1822 he completed an apprenticeship as a flat painter . He also learned to copy old masters .
He then stayed in Florence (1824–1829 and 1837) and in Rome (1829–1831 and 1833–1837) , supported by Winterthur patrons ; In 1827 he traveled to Livorno, Tuscany . As a member of the Ponte Molle Society , he came into contact with international artists; his circle of acquaintances included u. a Joseph Anton Koch and Horace Vernet . From 1831 to 1833 he earned his living as a portrait painter in his hometown. During this time he also traveled through northeastern Switzerland . In 1838/39 he went on a trip to Algeria , which shaped him as an artist. From the 1840s he worked as a private teacher in Winterthur. His students included u. a. August wake-up eater . There he founded the artist society, on whose board he was active. In 1847/48 he lived briefly in Munich.
His artistic focus was on Biedermeier landscapes - as well as portraits, genres - and history paintings . He created over 1000 works.
