Friedrich Georg Weitsch: Johann Christian Bach, undated, oil on canvas on wood, 79 × 65 cm, Kulturstiftung Sachsen-Anhalt, Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle (Saale) , inv. No. MOI01575 - For a long time the portrait was considered to be a portrait of Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, but it is believed to represent his pupil Johann Christian Bach.

Johann Christian Bach (born July 23, 1743 in Halle (Saale) ; † June 20, 1814 there ) was a pianist and teacher at the pedagogy in Halle. He belongs to the widely ramified Bach family ; to distinguish it from Johann Sebastian Bach's youngest son , Johann Christian Bach , he was nicknamed “Halle Clavier Bach”.

Life

Johann Christian Bach was the son of the cantor at St. Ulrich in Halle Georg Michael Bach (1703–1771); his uncle was the Thuringian court composer Johann Ludwig Bach (1677–1731).

Johann Christian Bach was a student of Wilhelm Friedemann Bach , from whom he received the piano booklet for Wilhelm Friedemann Bach as a gift. The Halle Clavier-Bach is probably shown in the portrait of Friedrich Georg Weitsch , which for a long time was regarded as a portrait of Wilhelm Friedemann. Shortly before his death, he bequeathed his music collection to the music director Johann Nicolaus Julius Kötschau (1788–1845).
