Johann Christian Bauer
Johann Christian Bauer (born November 15, 1802 in Hanau , † May 25, 1867 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German die cutter and type caster .
life and work
Bauer opened a font tailoring shop in Frankfurt am Main in 1833. In 1835 he took on Johann Christian Daniel Nies as a partner. After this partnership was dissolved in 1837, he founded the Bauersche Gießerei .
In 1839 he moved his business to England, but returned to the Free City of Frankfurt in 1847 . Because of the high quality of its typefaces, which Bauer usually cut himself, his type foundry developed into a leading company in the industry. His efforts for an effective legal protection of the writings against galvanic replication were unsuccessful.
In 1859 he constructed a high-speed type casting machine .
