Johann Christian Billroth
Johann Christian Billroth (born July 17, 1769 in Wolgast ; † September 20, 1846 in Greifswald ) was a lawyer and mayor of Greifswald.
Life
Billroth was the son of a Wolgast mayor and wine merchant.
Billroth completed his school days in Wolgast and then at the Stralsund high school . There he was a school friend of Ernst Moritz Arndt . From 1787 to 1792 he studied law in Greifswald, Jena and Göttingen.
After completing his studies, he worked as a lawyer and notary, in 1795 he became a councilor, in 1802 second and 1808 first lawyer. From 1821 to 1846 he was mayor of Greifswald as the successor to Johann Herrmann Odebrecht .
In 1817 he received an honorary doctorate from the Law Faculty of the University of Greifswald , was appointed a secret councilor and in 1845 received the Order of the Red Eagle, 3rd class with ribbon. Billroth died of a gastrointestinal infection.
His grandson was the famous surgeon Theodor Billroth .
