Johann Christian Ernst Ottiliae (born March 1, 1775 in Eisleben , † April 26, 1851 in Eisleben) was a Prussian mountain and hut clerk.

Life

Ottiliae was born on March 1, 1775 as the son of the councilor Johann Christian Ottiliae and his wife Dorothea , née Jakob (in) in the Lutherstadt Eisleben .

After completing school and his first activities in Mansfeld ironworks, he studied at the Bergakademie Freiberg from 1795 (matriculation no. 432). In 1799 he worked as a household clerk; one year later as a mining authority auditor. He was also the first and only teacher to teach at the Eisleben mountain school, which was founded in 1798 .

On December 12, 1803 he was given more responsible tasks in the administration of the Eisleber ironworks; then he stopped teaching.

On June 9, 1802, Ottiliae married Caroline Wilhelmine Koch , the daughter of the mountain and hut manager Friedrich Christian August Koch . This was Hüttenvogt in Bottendorf and from 1808 to 1813 chief miner in the Royal Westphälischen Bergamt Eisleben. This marriage resulted in twelve children, only four of whom survived the father. One of his sons, Ernst Hermann Ottiliae , was later one of the most famous personalities in the mining industry .

After the Wars of Liberation , the Royal Westphalian Mining Authority, which had previously been located in Eisleben, became a Prussian authority . Johann Christian Ernst Ottiliae, who worked here, became a mining engineer, 2nd class.

From 1814 to 1819 Ottiliae was a union manager for both the Eisleber and the Mansfeld ironworks. Among other things, his services to more productive smelting processes for Mansfeld copper slate are known from this period . At the side of Johann Carl Freiesleben , Franz Wilhelm Werner von Veltheim and Victor Leopold Friedrich Zimmermann, he was instrumental in the upswing of the Mansfeld metallurgy industry, in particular in the introduction of the desilvering process.

“The light hole 75 of the Froschmühlen tunnel sunk on the Helbraer corridor was given the name Ottiliae-Schacht in 1832 - while he was still in service . This honored the diverse achievements of Christian Ottiliae. The facility was in operation as a production and lift shaft from 1834 to 1842 and from 1846 to 1862. Its shaft depth was 138 m. After he was stopped, the manhole was filled. "

Johann Christian Ernst Ottiliae died on April 26, 1851. His last property later became a well-known and very popular entertainment venue; called the Ottiliaeburg . A street in Helbra also bears his name.
