The unworthy doctor

Johann Christoph Ettner (born March 15 or 16, 1654 in Glogau , † December 22, 1724 in Breslau ) was a German physician and novelist of the Baroque period .

Life

Nothing is known about Ettner's youth. In 1670 he enrolled at the Medical Faculty of the University of Leipzig , where he received his doctorate in 1674. In addition to medicine , he was also interested in alchemy and pharmacy . In 1689 he is recorded as a general practitioner in Breslau, where he tried in vain to open a pharmacy. Since 1693 he called himself "Imperial Council". The elevation of the nobility to "Ettner von Eiteritz" took place in 1708. Although he opposes quacking in his novels, he is still under the spell of alchemical tradition. His novels, which show solid specialist knowledge, offer a good insight into medical practice at the time. In a period of only about 20 years, six works with up to 1000 pages were published that dealt with the healing professions.
