Johann Christoph Röhling

Johann Christoph Röhling (born April 27, 1757 in Gundershausen near Darmstadt , † December 19, 1813 in Massenheim ) was a German naturalist and Protestant pastor. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Röhl. “He also published under the pseudonym Johann Wilhelm Joseph Weißenbruch.

Life

He was the son of a poor linen weaver (who also went on a trip to Suriname ) and first learned his father's trade. He was also interested in nature research and found some patrons who enabled him to go to school in Darmstadt and, from 1778, to study in Gießen . After that he was a private tutor, a teacher at an orphanage in Frankfurt am Main . In 1792 he became pastor in Braubach , 1800 in Breckenheim and 1802 in Massenheim.

He is best known for his flora of Germany and published about bees.

He was the father of Franz Friedrich Röhling .

Honors

The plant genus Roehlingia Dennst is named after him . from the rose apple family (Dilleniaceae).
