Johann Christoph Schröther the Elder

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Christoph Schröther (the elder) (born December 18, 1747 in Sonnewalde , Niederlausitz , Kingdom of Saxony ; † July 22, 1822 in Sonnewalde, Kingdom of Prussia ) was a German organ builder in Sonnewalde.

Life

The great-grandfather Matthäus Schröther was already a carpenter in Sonnewalde, as was the grandfather and the father, both named Johann Christoph Schröther, the latter also a musician.

Johann Christoph Schröther became a carpenter and organ builder in Sonnewalde and was later also a church councilor and magistrate. The first work as an organ builder is known from around 1774, and the construction of a piano forte from 1795 . A collaboration with the son Johann Christoph Schröther the Younger was mentioned for 1800 . The workshop could have been handed over to him around 1804, since it was first listed separately in the Niederlausitz address book as junior. was performed (1801 not yet) and no further collaborations between the two are known. The handover took place no later than 1820.

Johann Christoph Schröther the Elder was married to Maria Sophia Liebe.

Works (selection)

Some new organs in Niederlausitz are known by Johann Christoph Schröther the Elder, as well as attributions of new constructions, as well as extensions and repairs. Work from around 1804 could already have been carried out under the responsibility of the son Johann Christoph Schröther the Younger, which is not clearly recognizable due to the identical names.
