Johann Christoph Vielstich (* 1722 in Braunschweig ; † January 12, 1800 in Lesum ) was a German porcelain painter , stove manufacturer and faience manufacturer .

Life

Vielstich was the son of Martin Friedrich Vielstich († 1752), who, among other things, worked as a foreman in the ducal faience factory in Braunschweig. Vielstich, who worked as a journeyman for the master potter and stove manufacturer Henning Dettleff Hennings in Hamburg from 1748 to 1750, set up the Aumund faience manufacture in 1751 , which he managed as a foreman until 1755. When French masters were hired here, he opened his own “ pot bakery and faience factory ” in Lesum , in which he manufactured “a special type of ceramic and tiled stoves ”. His products were widespread all over northern Germany. Among other things, ovens have been preserved at Gut Riensbergas well as in Schönebeck Palace .

In the years 1756 to 1758 two kilns were in operation, in which Vielstich mainly produced earthen vessels, but also "fine dishes of all kinds and colors". Vielstich also ran a peddler trade . He sold his faience and earthenware utensils in the markets of Bremen, Braunschweig, Lüneburg, Scharmbeck, Oldenburg, Rodenkirchen and Varel. He had set up permanent warehouses in Bremen, Lüneburg and Varel for the distribution of his goods. In 1773, business was so bad that bankruptcy proceedings were opened. The manufacture was acquired by Tjark Brinkama, a brother-in-law of Vielstich, who worked as a miller in Grohn and Vegesack. Vielstich continued to work there until his death on January 12, 1800. The factory was then closed. In addition to earthenware and common tableware, the products also included table tops, writing implements, potpourris , figurines, wall tiles and tiled stoves.

Vielstich had been married to Hanna Steinmeyer from Grohn since 1752. His son Jacob was born in 1757. Another son named Friedrich worked as a painter in the factory.
