Varnbühler began studying law at the University of Wittenberg in 1567 . In 1576 he received an invitation to do a doctorate as a Dr. both rights at the University of Basel . In the civil service of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel he rose to the Princely Braunschweigischen and Episcopal Halberstadt Council.

On January 18, 1594 he was appointed by the Lübeck Council for five years from Trinity of the Year to the Syndicus of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck and also accepted this appointment. However, he was unable to take up his post in Lübeck because, contrary to previous promises, he was not released by his previous employer, Duke Heinrich Julius von Braunschweig.

In 1608 he was a co-signer of an open edict prohibiting any connection with the city of Braunschweig , which had been decided on October 13, 1608 at the - only rarely visited - district assembly of the Lower Saxon Empire in Helmstedt . It was also directed against the Hanseatic cities of Bremen and Lübeck, which supported Braunschweig diplomatically, economically and militarily through the Hanseatic League during this period of its assertion against the dukes of Braunschweig ( Braunschweig feud ).
