Johann Daniel Riedel (born November 5, 1786 in Rehna ; † February 11, 1843 in Berlin ) was a German pharmacist and entrepreneur .

Life

He began an apprenticeship as a pharmacist in Ludwigslust in 1800 and moved to the Gottschalk'sche pharmacy in Schwerin in 1806 . In 1808 he received a prescription position at the Valentin Rose 's pharmacy in Berlin and took over its management in 1810. The von Rose pharmacy was a center for pharmaceutical and chemical research (the Roses were associated with Martin Klaproth ) and also attracted chemists and pharmacists outside Berlin (like Emanuel Merck ). In 1814 he acquired the former Hausmann'sche pharmacy "Zum Schwarzen Adler" in Berlin, Friedrichstrasse. 173, and expanded it with a larger laboratory for pharmaceutical products to become the "Riedel'schen drug wholesale".

For the first time in Prussia, Riedel produced large quantities of quinine and other alkaloids. He attached great importance to high quality. When he died, the company had 400 chemical substances on its price list.

Johann Daniel Riedel died in Berlin in 1843 at the age of 56. He was buried in Cemetery II of the Jerusalem and New Churches in front of the Hallesches Tor . Many other members of the Riedel family later found their final resting place there. However, the grave of Johann Daniel Riedel has not been preserved.

Further development of the company

His son Gustav Riedel, born in 1816, took over the legacy of the large pharmacy as a pharmacist in 1843 and expanded it with production buildings on Französische Strasse. In 1874 he crossed the threshold from the JD Riedel large pharmacy to the JD Riedel pharmaceutical factory with the construction of a new factory at Richtstrasse 12/13. His younger son Franz Riedel († 1897 Potsdam) took over the management of the pharmacy in Friedrichstrasse in 1874, which was spun off from the empire of his brother Gustav.

In 1886 Gustav Riedel's sons Fritz and Paul took over the management and expanded in 1888 to include a new factory in Bohnsdorf near Grünau (Berlin). In 1905 Fritz Riedel and Paul Riedel converted the JD Riedel pharmaceutical factory from an OHG into a stock corporation. As early as 1912, all of JD Riedel AG's production facilities were brought together in a new plant in Britz near Berlin ( Riedelstrasse ).

During the inflation of 1922/23 Fritz Riedel jun. (Son of Fritz Riedel senior) for only 40 million marks all shares in " E. de Haën AG " and thus created the cornerstone of the 1928 merged chemical company "JD Riedel - E. de Haën AG" based in Berlin. In 1926 the company published the reference work "Riedel's Mentor" for the first time, which is regarded as the forerunner of today's Red List for Medicines. In 1931 Fritz Riedel jun. completely withdrawn from the company amid the economic crisis.

In 1936/37 the companies Chinosolfabrik AG and Vanillin-Fabrik GmbH in Hamburg were taken over.

From 1943 the name was simplified to Riedel-de Haën AG. Because of the bomb damage in World War II , the company headquarters were relocated from Berlin-Britz and production capacities from Hamburg to Seelze near Hanover in 1948 .

Since a merger in 1999, the company has been called Honeywell Specialty Chemicals Seelze . The name Riedel-de Haën was used as a brand name until at least 2008.
