Johann Eduard Erdmann (born June 1 . Jul / 13. June  1805 greg. In Wolmar , Russian Empire ; † 12. June 1892 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German professor of philosophy and writer. He is counted among the ancient Hegelians .

Life

Johann Eduard Erdmann first studied theology at the University of Dorpat and later in Berlin, where he came under the influence of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel .

From 1829 to 1832 he worked as a clergyman in his hometown, but then turned to philosophy. Back in Berlin in 1834 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD. In 1836 he was appointed honorary professor at the University of Halle . There he was appointed full professor in 1839. He lived in Halle until his death.

As a writer, he was best known for his outline of the history of philosophy . What is remarkable about this work is that Erdmann was not content with simply listing the various schools of philosophy. Rather, he presents it as a continuous continuation of the task of answering the essential questions of life from the beginning of time.
