In this picture, which was painted in 1708, Johann Ernst is dressed like a girl like all the other little boys of his time. The floral, gold-colored dress has a deep neckline, and Johann Ernst wears a whalebone bodice. Only the inscription and the hairstyle reveal that this is a boy.
