Life

Dirks was born as the son of the cigar manufacturer Garm Jeles Dirks and Dortje Maria Dirks (née Meyer). After leaving school, Dirks first completed an apprenticeship as a book printer at the Emder Zeitung , but at this point he discovered his passion for writing. The newspaper publisher enabled the young writer to complete further training as a journalist and to become an editor.

Dirks made early acquaintance with local poets such as Hermann Löns and Friedrich Freudenthal and then published his first own texts. He had a close friendship with Berend de Vries , who followed Dirk's literary work closely.

Dirks was married to Marie Beermann from 1900. The sons Johann-Friedrich Dirks and Heinrich Reinhard Dirks emerged from the marriage.

Dirks wrote his texts mainly in Emden Low German. His stories reflect the closeness of the writer to the East Frisian homeland and its people. In terms of content, they go beyond the purely everyday and also touch on deeper subjects such as fear and hope, joy and sadness or life and death.

In Dirk's poems it is primarily natural moods that are expressed. They are said to have a particular poetic delicacy that contrasts with the region's rather austere local poetry. Several poems were set to music as songs.

During his lifetime Dirks published his texts only occasionally in daily newspapers or periodicals. In 2002 a summary of selected works appeared for the first time in the book volume Well weet, waar 't gaud fär is - literary work by an East Frisian poet .
