Johann Friedrich Facius (born January 26, 1750 in Coburg ; † June 21, 1825 there ) was a German pedagogue and classical philologist.

Life

Johann Friedrich Facius was the third son of the ducal council and secret secretary Daniel Wilhelm Facius (August 5, 1719 in Coburg; † unknown) and his wife Christiane Sophia Elisabeth (* 1727; † September 6, 1787), a daughter of the consistorial councilor Johann Christian Pertsch, born. He had four other siblings:

  • Johann Caspar Lebrecht Facius (born September 12, 1748 in Coburg; † August 31, 1809 there), court and chamber councilor;
  • Johann Christian Facius (born August 24, 1751 in Coburg; † unknown);
  • Johann Sebastian Facius (born January 14, 1753 in Coburg; † June 5, 1810), member of the Chamber Council;
  • Wilhelmina Johanna Christine Facius (born August 24, 1791 in Coburg; † unknown), mother unknown.

He was tutored by a private tutor and from the age of 13 he attended the Casimirianum Coburg high school in 1763 . There he was tutored by the teacher Gottlieb Christoph Harleß (1738–1815), who encouraged his inclinations towards philological studies, other teachers were Erhard Andreas Frommann (1722–1774), Johann Friedrich Gruner , Johann Georg Heinrich Feder , Lorenz Adam Bartenstein (1711 –1796) and Christoph Daniel Prätorius (1733–1810).

In 1767 he began studying theology and philology at the University of Göttingen and attended lectures by Christian Gottlob Heyne , whose lectures aroused his interest in archeology and art and with whom he remained in correspondence until 1807 after completing his studies. During his studies he entered the university's philological seminar.

In 1769 he got a job as a private tutor in Hanover , but gave up the position again shortly afterwards.

He had applied for a job at the University of Erlangen and added the Epistola critica in aliquot Orphei et Apollonii Rhodii loca and had an article printed on the Aegis in 1773 ; however, the application was unsuccessful. That year he followed a call from Abbot Erhard Andreas Frommann, who previously worked as a teacher at the grammar school in Coburg and now as a teacher in Kloster Berge near Magdeburg , but the position did not suit him either. After the abbot's death he went back to Coburg in 1774 and became a private teacher for some noble high school students.

In 1777 he became an associate professor at the Gymnasium Casimirianum Coburg. In 1784 he refused an appointment at the University of Dorpat , but then obtained a full professorship at the Casimirianum Coburg, for this he was also given the title of council in 1807 and in 1824 the philosophical faculty of the University of Göttingen awarded him the honoris atque observantiae testandae causa doctorate.
