Johann Friedrich Pereth

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Friedrich Pereth (also Beretti , Peretti ; baptized November 16, 1643 in Salzburg ; † February 3, 1722 there ) was an Austrian baroque painter .

Life

Johann Friedrich Pereth was born the son of the Augsburg painter Johann Franz Pereth and his wife Christina Müller and was baptized on November 16, 1643 in Salzburg Cathedral . The name of his grandfather, which was written Peretti , suggests that the family came from Italy. Nothing is known about Johann Friedrich Pereth's education, he probably learned from his father. In 1665 he helped his father work on the triumphal arches for Emperor Leopold I on the occasion of his passage to Tyrol. After his father's death in May 1678, he took over his workshop.

Since Johann Friedrich Pereth, like his father, did not belong to the painters' guild , he mainly worked for parishes in the province of Salzburg, for which he created numerous altarpieces. After conflicts with the guild-bound painters, he was granted court protection by the Prince Archbishop in 1709 . Although he was very busy and valued, he did not make a fortune and received grace money from the city and state of Salzburg in old age . He died unmarried and childless in 1722 in Salzburg.

Pereth mainly painted pictures for church clients with religious picture statements in the sense of the ruling Counter-Reformation . His work shows the influences of Joachim von Sandrart and Johann Michael Rottmayr as well as the engagement with the Venetian painting of the 16th century, especially with Paolo Veronese . However, it does not achieve an overall effect as in the baroque picture composition, but remains with the joining of individual figures.
