Johann Friedrich Pries (born September 29, 1776 in Ribnitz , † January 20, 1832 in Rostock ) was a German educator and professor at the University of Rostock .

Life

Johann Friedrich Pries was the son of the theologian Joachim Heinrich Pries the Elder. J. (1747–1796) and his wife Marie Friederike Katharina Stier (1758–1809), daughter of an Elbe customs commissioner from Dömitz . He received his first education from his father and private tutors. From 1788 he attended the large city school in Rostock. From 1791 he began studying theology, philosophy and philology at the Rostock University, which he continued from 1798 to 1800 at the University of Göttingen . After his return he was awarded a doctorate in 1801 at the Philosophical Faculty. phil. PhD. From 1803 to 1805 he worked as a private lecturer.

In 1805 he was appointed full professor of morality and aesthetics at the university. He gave lectures on the history of fine arts, poetry, the philosophy of religion, the general history of philosophy, and he also gave lectures on English classics, especially Shakespeare. In 1818 he became a full member of the Berlin Association for the German Language, and he was also a member of the Mecklenburg Heimatbund. In addition to his professorship, he was co-director from 1828 to 1831 and chairman of the board of directors of the large city school from 1830 to 1831, where he also worked as a teacher of the newer languages ​​in the upper level. Pries held his professorship until 1832, during which time he was rector of the university four times and dean of the philosophy faculty several times.

From January 11, 1815, Johann Friedrich Pries was married to Ernestine, b. Saniter, a daughter of the grand ducal license administrator in Ribnitz. The couple had seven sons.
